How it plays

How Discworld MUD plays

Discworld MUD is a multi-user dungeon: a shared world described in text, where you type commands such as 'look', 'say' or 'kill rat' and read what happens. Pratchett's humour runs through the descriptions, and the city of Ankh-Morpork is large enough to get lost in.

There are no levels in the usual sense. Skills improve as you use them, and the guilds (Assassins, Priests, Thieves, Warriors, Witches, Wizards and Fools) shape what your character can learn. Players run shops, own houses and write newspapers.

Your first half hour

  1. 0–5 min
Press 'Play Now: Browser Client' on the front page and create a character at the prompt.
  2. 5–15 min
Choose a nationality; the getting-started guide suggests Morporkian, which starts you in Ankh-Morpork. You begin in a newbie area with a little money.
  3. 15–30 min
Ask questions on the newbie channel, which stays open to you for your first 18 hours of play, and read the help on commands before leaving the newbie area for good.

Accounts and ages

Characters are made inside the game, with no website account and no social login. We did not create one, so whether it asks for an email address is unconfirmed. Scripts, timers and auto-login are against the rules.

Discworld MUD has no age rating and we found no age clause in its rules or guides. Its own pages say the volunteers keep it free.
